1965 Corvette Sting Ray “Black Ray” Specs

Engine:

The race engine has 4 bolt mains and has been bored .030 over with a forged steel crank. The ported and polished heads are GM Stage II cast iron “Angle Plug” heads with 184cc intake port, 2.02” intake valves, 1.60” exhausts and 64cc combustion chambers (GM’s highest hp production cast iron heads). Other components include GM pink rods, 11.5:1 forged TRW’s, Isky full roller high lift cam (252/260 duration at .050” lift and .600” lift), Isky valve train and Hilborn EFI. The induction system is a real head turner. At first glance it looks like a classic Hilborn mechanical fuel injection that you would have seen on a dragster in the 70’s. Upon closer inspection you will find 32lb RC Engineering injectors screwed into the valley sides of the Hilborn throttle bodies and two black anodized fuel rails mounted between them. What looks like Hilborn fuel hoses are actually vacuum hoses running to the EFI’s manifold absolute pressure sensor all of which is controlled by a glove box mounted F.A.S.T. computerized fuel/ignition system. Stuart Hilborn was so happy with the finished project that he asked if he could sign the dash which he did as you will see in the photos. Finishing off the engine you will find an MSD Corvette tach-drive distributor, an MSD 6AL CD ignition and MSD Super Conductor plug wires. The engine was designed to perform like a new Corvette in regards to both performance and economy. It idles quietly at 750 rpm and effortlessly cruises the highway at 70mph yet can give you a major rush at any speed.

Transmission:

The tranny is a Classic Chevy 5 speed conversion, the core of which is the Tremec TKO600 (the 0.64:1 “deep overdrive” model) having a unique tail housing. This housing is fitted with a block off where there shifter normally goes on a TKO and is then CNC machined to accept a side mounted shifter which puts the shift lever in the stock location for a C2. The CC5S conversion includes: a unique transmission mount bracket, an OE style shift lever and a specific driveshaft with a unique front yoke having a small universal joint which avoids the interference with the body, typical of C2’s modified with transmissions having large diameter output shafts.
