1972 Convertible 442 "V" Code

SOLD!The 442 was a muscle car option package for Oldsmobile Cutlass models sold in the US beginning with the 1964 model year. It became a model of its own from 1968 to 1971 then reverted to an option package after that. The 442 name reverted to an appearance and handling option package (option code W-29) in 1972 on the Cutlass Supreme convertible. This package consisted of the "FE2" suspension upgrades (heavy duty springs & shocks, front and rear sway bars, boxed lower rear control arms), 14 X 7 wheels, side striping, fender and deck lid badging, faux hood louvers and a unique grille. When paired with the optional L75 455 in³ V8 the rear bumper sported cutouts for the low restriction dual exhaust tips. In 1972 Oldsmobile used the 5th digit of the VIN to designate the engine used in the vehicle. A “V” was used for big block Cutlass applications with M-20 4 speeds. Only 66 convertible “V” codes were made in 1972 making this an extremely car. Other notable features of the “V” coded cars included a fine spline input shaft for the M-20 wide ratio transmission, the speedometer had no PRNDL printed on it, the steering column had no provision for the shift lever, it had a lightweight aluminum intake manifold, anti-spin differential with 3.23:1 gears, heavy duty cooling and routing for the positive battery cable ran along the intake manifold and used a tube that routed the cable down the back of the cylinder head. This is a 4 owner car that is registered in The Cutlass “V” Code Registry and has an owner history going back to the original dealer as well as the original broadcast sheet. It has just been meticulously frame off restored and is very correct. A few upgrades were made during the restoration such as adding power steering, power brakes and an OEM 3 piece rear wing spoiler. This car was originally ordered without stripes and had a black top which were changed to add to the overall appearance of the Viking Blue paint which is just breathtaking. A comparable “V” code sold at Barrett Jackson Palm Beach in 2008 for $100,000. If you missed that one this will likely be your last chance…
